ESU 5 Student Recognized as Distinguished Scholar from NDE

Each year, the Nebraska Department of Education recognizes high school students for their leadership in language learning, commitment to language study, appreciation for cultural diversity, and communicative competence.

Mary Worthing, a Spanish 2 student at Arthur High School, was nominated by her teacher, Kelly Garcia, ESU 5. In her application portfolio, Worthing wrote

To me, learning a world language is something I can do to be part of something bigger, being a teenager in a small community. I think that a world of many languages should not divide us, but should motivate us to explore the colorful world that surrounds us.”

Worthing is one of 38 Spanish students across the state to earn a Distinguished Scholar Award this year from the Nebraska Department of Education.

I am so grateful that the ESU had so many specialists to work with my son, because now I know what to do to help my child with autism. The speech pathologist and occupational therapist from the ESU have allowed him to gain more than I ever expected him to. I don’t know what I would have done without them.
